To  :   Encik Abdullah Bakri,
Principal, SMK Bukit Tinggi

Title  :   Charily Run 2013
SMK Bukit Tinggi annual Charity Run for 2013 was held on 18th September. The event was originally scheduled to start at 6.30 a.m. but the flag-off only took place at 7 a.m. due to the rain. Like the past years, the run started and ended at the school field.

The purpose of this year's Charity Run is to raise funds for the local orphanage. Participants were charged a RM15 registration fee that includes some mineral water and a t-shirt.

The entire route of the run was 10.5 kilometres. A total of 578 students throughout the school took part in the event. Nur Amalina from Form 5B came out first, followed by Boon Keat from 5A, second and Ganesh Lingam from 4D, third. The winners were presented with medals and hampers by the President of the Parent – Teacher Association, Datuk Rahim Mahmud.

While the event was successfully completed, there were some incidents that occurred during the run. Two participants lost their belongings. Both of them left their bags at the side of the field despite being repeatedly reminded by the organisers not to do so. Participants were advised to leave their belongings in the hall next to the field where there were students on duty. Fortunately, they only lost small amounts of money and some snacks.

Apart from that, some participants also sustained minor injuries. This was due to the fact that they did not do warm-up exercise before running. As a result, they suffered cramps halfway through the run. They were immediately attended to by the medical team on standby and recovered after a short rest.
From this year's event, it is clear that there are still room for improvement in the organisation of this event. For example, more refreshment stands should be made available throughout the course of the run. This will ensure that participants are well hydrated while running. Besides, more volunteers should be brought in to control and direct traffic where the route meets with the main street. This will ensure the safety of the participants as well as the safety of road users passing by the area.

How to Improve the Students' Standard of English
Good morning, boys and girls.

First and foremost, I wish to thank the Principal for granting me permission to speak at this morning's assembly. The topic of my talk is 'How to Improve Your English'. This talk is also an appropriate introduction to our English Language Week which begins today.

All of you know the importance of English. It is the language of knowledge, international communication and trade. I know that most of you want to improve your English but are not sure how to go about it. I am going to tell you how to do it. I know the methods work because they have worked for me.

The very first thing you have to do is to read more. Read newspapers, books and magazines. There is no other way that is more effective than reading. There are no short-cuts to mastering the English Language. You have to read more and you have to do it for some time before you can see the results.

You can also attend English tuition classes. The more time you spend studying the language, the better you will be. At such classes, you will be taught grammar, sentence construction, common errors and so on. All this will improve your understanding of English.

Studying how to write English is not enough. You have to learn how to speak it. In fact, when you go for job interviews or start working, the ability to speak English is very important. If you cannot converse with the interviews in English, you will probably not be given the job. You will likely have to speak to your boss in English or you may have to conduct meetings in English. You may also have to speak to potential clients or customers in English. If you cannot speak English well, it will be a very big disadvantage. When you first start to speak English, you will surely make mistakes. Never mind, carry on doing it and one day you will find that you can speak English very fluently. As the saying goes, ‘Practice makes perfect’.

Another way to improve your English is to correspond with English pen-pals. If you correspond with people who are not native speakers of the language, you may learn wrong English from them. So, the best way to avoid learning bad English is to learn it from the native speakers themselves.

An interesting way to learn English is to go and see English films. From the films you can learn how the language is spoken, the ways English words are pronounced and the situations in which certain words, phrases or sentences are used. At the same time, you would be enjoying the films.

Listening to English programmes over the radio is also a very effective way of learning English. As the English on our local stations may be suspect, tune in to the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) which has impeccable English. In fact, one very famous Oscar-winning American actor learnt his English in the same way. At first, he spoke English like an uneducated man but after months of listening to the BBC, he spoke like a graduate from one of the top British universities.

The next method is like going to the cinema to see English films. However, instead of going to the cinema, you do it at home. You can watch English films on television. Try not to look at the subtitles at all. Try to catch what the actors and actresses are saying. It will be difficult at first but you will be able to do it with more practice.

A very bold but guide effective way of learning English is to act in English plays. Join the school drama society or an amateur acting club. When you act in a play, you have to memorise your lines and give life to them. I cannot think of a more effective way of learning English than this because the English you have memorised will stay with you forever.

You can also take part in elocution contests. Writing the speech you have to deliver, memorising it and then delivering it will really improve your English. You will learn not only how to write English but also how to speak it.

Taking part in debates is also a very good method of improving your English but your English must already be quite good before you can do it. This is very different from taking part in dramas or elocution contests where you just have to memorise what you have to say. In debates, you have to attack or rebut the points put forward by your opponents. There is no way you can prepare beforehand what you want to say. You have to do everything on the spur of the moment. That takes quite a good command of the language. So, take part in debates only when your English is up to standard.

One very important thing you must do if you want to be very good at English is always to check the meanings of words that you do not know in a good dictionary. Many students are too lazy to do this. They only try to guess the meanings of the words. This will not do for almost a hundred times out of a hundred, they will guess the meaning wrongly. The dictionary will give you the exact meanings. In the beginning, you may have to check the meanings of almost every word. However, when your vocabulary improves, you will have to check the meanings of fewer and fewer words.

Another very important thing is you have to correct the pronunciation of many of your words. You have heard many words pronounced wrongly by many people and you are pronouncing them the same way they do. You may think that just because many people pronounce the words that way, the pronunciation must be correct. This is not true. Many words are wrongly pronounced. A few examples are 'deposit', ‘divorce', 'hostel', development' and ‘preservative'. The ‘de' in 'deposit' is pronounced as 'di' and not ‘dep'. The ‘di' in ‘divorce' is pronounced as ‘di’ and not ‘dai’. The ‘tel' in 'hostel' is pronounced as 'ti' and not 'tell'. The correct pronunciation for the ‘de’ in ‘development’ is 'di' and not 'dare'. The 'pre' in ‘preservative’ is actually pronounced as ‘pri’ and not ‘prare’.

The most commonly mispronounced letter is 'O'. It is seldom pronounced ‘oh’ but rather ‘eh'. The dictionary will show you how to pronounce the letter ‘O’. For example, 'police' is not pronounced 'polis' but rather ‘pelis’. 'Consider' is not pronounced 'konside' but rather 'kenside'. The word ‘monopoly’ is frequently mispronounced. It is not ‘monopoli’ but rather ‘menopeli’. 'Coconut' is not 'kokonat' but rather 'kokenat'. Remember that if a word has only one 'O', it is seldom pronounced as 'oh', and no matter how many 'O's' a word has in its middle part, only one of them is pronounced as ‘oh’. However, if the letter’O’ is at the beginning of a word such as 'oppose' and ‘object’, it is usually pronounced as ‘oh’.

Get someone to teach you the pronunciation symbols or learn them yourself. After that check the pronunciation of every word before you use it in your speech.

I have given you a few ways in which you can improve your English. You may know other ways. Use them to improve your English. It is for your own good and the good of the country.

Before I step down from the rostrum, I would like to say, ‘LONG LIVE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!’

Thank you very much.

SPM Sample Essay - Informal Letter (How to reduce the number of snatch thefts)

Question 1
Recently, there has been a big increase in the number of snatch thefts all over the country. You know a number of measures which you think can help to reduce the number of snatch thefts. You have got the knowledge by interviewing the Chief Police Officer of the state. You would like to share what you have learnt with as many people as possible so you write to one of the local papers. Below are the points you have made while interviewing the Chief of Police.
How to reduce the number of snatch thefts:
  • Wear clothes with pockets. Do not flash money around.
  • Do not carry too much cash with you.
  • Keep your money, identity card and driving licences in different places.
  • Try not to carry handbags with long straps.
  • Do not put handbags in the front carriers of your motor¬cycles.

Dear Editor,
Snatch thefts are almost daily occurrences and women are the victims. Many of them have been injured while trying to fight off the snatch thieves. Many of them were pulled to the ground. Such victims suffered bruises, cuts and knocks. Some victims on motorcycles had fallen when the snatch thieves pushed them to make them fall. While the victims lay stunned or unconscious on the roads, the snatch thieves grabbed their purses or bags and then scooted off on their motorcycles. There was one case in which a young woman was carrying her two-year-old daughter in the front basket of her motorcycle. Two snatch thieves came from behind and pushed her. She lost her balance and fell off her machine. Her child riding in her front basket was instantly killed by her fall. I have some suggestions on how snatch thefts can be reduced.

First of all, women should try to wear clothes with pockets where they can keep their purses. Usually women wear clothes with no pockets and so are forced to carry handbags to keep their purses. Wear pants which have pockets tor you to keep your purse. In this way, snatch thieves cannot rob you. That is also the reason why men do not become the victims of snatch thieves.

Second, do not flash money around. Some snatch thieves may be there and they will notice you. Then they will make you their victim when the opportunity arises. So, try not to show that you are carrying a lot of money with you.

Third, do not carry too much cash with you. Just carry the amount you need to make your purchases. In this way, even if your purse is snatched, you will not lose much money.

Usually a snatch victim suffers a lot of inconvenience because she keeps her identity card and driving licence together with her money in her purse. So, when her purse is snatched, she loses not only her money but her identity card and driving licence as well. She may not have lost much money but losing her identity card and driving licence is very inconvenient. A police report has to be made, fines have to be paid and a new identity card and a new driving licence have to be made. This involves a lot of time, money and inconvenience. So, I would advise women who carry handbags with their purses inside to keep their identity cards and driving licences in some other place. They may keep these items in a pocket in their clothes or in the glove compartment of their cars.

If you need to carry a handbag, do not carry one with long straps. The long straps make it easy for thieves to snatch your handbags. The long straps are also dangerous because you may be dragged along the road if the thieves work from a motorcycle. If you are riding on a motorcycle, you may fall off your machine when your handbag is snatched. If you are carrying a handbag, grab it close to your body. This makes it more difficult for snatch thieves to work.

Many women who ride motorcycles put their handbags in the baskets in the front part of their motorcycles. This is inviting snatch thieves to steal your handbags. They can consider themselves lucky if the thieves just grab their handbags and speed off on their motorcycles because the snatch thieves may push them so that they fall from their machines. If this happens, they will not only lose their handbags, but they may suffer serious injuries or even lose their lives.

My suggestions will reduce snatch thefts. I hope that they will be adopted by the women who may be potential victims of snatch thieves.

Yours sincerely,
Lau T'eik

SPM Sample Essay : How to Save Water

I have written this article to let you know the many ways you can save water.

I feel sad when I see the way you use water. You use water very wastefully. You turn on the tap for about five minutes just to wash your hands. After washing your hands or something else, you very often leave the tap running for a few minutes more. When you wash your shoes, you use pail after pail of water. When you wash your bicycles or motorcycles, you use a hose. You allow the water to flow out of the hose even when you do not need it. All these acts waste water. Water is not cheap. Water is quite expensive to process. Our water supply is also not limitless. We can end up without water if we do not use it carefully. If your memory is not too short, you should remember that only a few years ago, some of our reservoirs ran dry and there had to be water rationing. So, we should not waste water. Here are the ways you can save water.

The first thing you can do is to repair leaking taps immediately. Even just a dripping tap can make you lose gallons of water a day. If you repair a dripping or leaking tap immediately, you can save quite a lot of water. You can repair a leaking tap just by changing the rubber inside. Only rarely do you have to change the tap.

The second thing you can do is always to wash a full load of clothes. Do not wash just a few items of clothing. If you do the latter you will just be wasting water.

After washing your clothes in the washing machine, do not throw away the water. You can use it to water the plants. The water is very good for plants because it contains phosphates which are very good for the plants.

The fourth thing is never to water flowers and other plants when it is very warm. The heat will cause the water to evaporate. Water all plants in the early morning and in the evening when the sun is not so hot. Then the water will not be lost through evaporation.

You should also not use a hose when you are washing your motorcycle or car. Using a hose uses a lot of water. You should use a pail of water and a sponge. If you use a pail and a sponge, you use only a little water.

When you wash vegetables, never do it under a running tap. A lot of water is wasted in this way. You should wash vegetables in a basin of water. Then you will save water.

SPM English Essay - My Best Pal

Close friendships are hard to come by these days. In an ever-changing world with people striving to achieve their interpretation of preordained success, it is hard to know who your true friends are. Fortunately, I found my best pal early at the tender age of seven. We were both enrolled at the same school and were at wits’ ends as we searched tirelessly for our designated classes.

Samantha and I got acquainted as both of us were in the same class and sat next to each other. Samantha was a happy-go-lucky girl who always managed to breathe fresh air into the sometimes arid classroom. She always knew what to say and would voice them at the best possible moments. Both pupils and teachers alike enjoyed her company and liveliness. There was hardly ever a dull moment when she was around with her funny quips and expressions.

Samantha was born with a silver spoon. Her father was a businessman and her mother owned and ran a boutique. Both her parents were very caring towards her as she, just like I, was the only child of the family. Samantha came to school each day with a perpetual smile. She was a very nice person to be around with. She and I used to go everywhere together and both of us were rarely seen apart. We used to talk about so many things as we walked, thoroughly enjoying our time together.

One day, I went to school and forgot to ask my parents for lunch money. At first, I was not hungry and thought I could bear going without a meal but soon, my stomach began to growl. Without asking, Samantha generously paid for my meal and drinks during recess. The incident revealed to me how lucky I was to have such a caring and compassionate friend.

As time went on, people started teasing us as we were spending more and more time together. We seemed to know what each other thought and we cared for each other deeply. Was I in love with her? I did not know then and we both knew we were too young for all that emotional roller coaster.

Currently, Samantha and I are studying at different schools. It was hard to be apart at first, but technology in the form of instant messaging and e-mails have helped to bridge the gap in our friendship. I sincerely wish our friendship will never end as it would be equivalent to waking up from a beautiful dream.

SPM English Essay - Describe an afternoon at the bus station

It was two o’clock in the afternoon. I was heading towards the bus station with Mohan after Mrs Wong’s extra class. The sun was beating mercilessly on my back and I could feel my sweat trickling down my spine. I have often wished that my mother would allow me to ride a motorcycle to school. She says that I am not ready but we both know that she is terrified that a car would knock me down.

When I reached the bus station, it was nearly empty except for a handful of boys. Mohan and I strode to a bench near the stationmaster’s office. I could feel the tension on my shoulders as the straps of my school bag ate into my shoulder. “Where is the bus?” I sighed to myself. An elderly woman came and asked me where I was going. She started a conversation but gave up after my monosyllable answers.

Suddenly, someone shouted and I saw a bus swerved into the station. I got up, thankful for the chance to escape from the woman. . It was Mohan’s bus. The group of boys were jostling each other to get into the bus. “Masuk! Masuk!” shouted the conductor but nobody seemed to be moving. The black fumes made me nauseous. All of a sudden, people started appearing from all directions to board their bus. In no time, the passengers were packed like sardines in the bus. It started to move, leaving some unfortunate passengers behind. I waved at Mohan when I noticed him dangling on the steps of the bus. The bus swerved out of the station again. It left another trail of black smoke.

I decided to go to Panjang’s ice stall. The iced sugar cane juice soothed my parched throat as I sipped slowly, all the while keeping an eye on the bus. Then I saw the bus heading towards the station. I paid for my drinks. “See you tomorrow,” I waved to Panjang.

Once more, the crowd began to swell near the bus. I noticed that the elderly woman was being shoved around by the boys. She started hitting them with her umbrella. Then, I saw Raja, my classmate at the back of the bus. I hurled my bag through the window and he caught it. By the time I got into the bus, it had already started moving. I got into my seat and told myself that I must really try to convince my mother about the motorcycle again.

SPM English Essay - SPEECH : Tak Nak Campaign

DIRECTED WRITING: 35 MARKS

DIRECTED: SPEECH

Your school is having a month-long ‘A Healthy Body Campaign’. As President of the Health Club of your school, you decide to give a speech on the ‘Tak nak Campaign’ recently launched by the government.

Tak Nak Campaign

A very good morning to our dear Principal, Mr. Hasnan bin Jaafar, teachers and students.

Recently, our former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi launched an anti-smoking campaign called “Tak Nak”. You can now see this short and rhyming catch phrase “Tak Nak” everywhere – on billboards, posters, TV ads, and sometimes I even hear it on the radio. Though some people have criticised our government for setting aside a staggering sum of RM100 million over 6 years for the campaign, it is nothing compared to the huge amounts that tobacco companies spend to promote smoking.

But in this war against smoking, money definitely talks; it is necessary for the Tak Nak Campaign to constanly remind us of the hazard of smoking because about 50 Malaysian teenagers light up for the first time every day. In fact, some of these youth progress steadily from this to regular use, with addiction raking hold within a few years. And this is despite the warning on every pack of cigarettes that states unequivocally “Smoking is dangerous to your health”.

What can the Tak Nak Campaign do to combat this? Their aggressive advertising creates media awareness among the public, especially among the fashionable young crowd, that smokers have yellowed teeth and suffer from shortness of breath and tells them that it is not cool to smoke. It is also not responsible of them to affect non-smokers with second-hand smoke.

Also, there is a succession of infomercials on TV and in the papers showing the debilitating effects of tobacco addiction on the body and gruesome statistics of smoke-related deaths. We are now familiar with the graphic pictures of damaged lungs on billboards which should scare people into not smoking. This works, as I know some of my friends are quitting now, or trying to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke per week.

However, I feel any anti-smoking campaign is more effective if other people and organisations are actively involved too. Yes, the first step has been taken by the top, but sad to say, many of our politicians smoke themselves. Nearer to home, so do some of our parents and teachers.

These adults have to be good role models by not smoking themselves. If they do smoke, they should tell their children and students that they regret that they ever started, and then take steps to quit smoking as soon as possible. They must practise what they preach.

On a more positive note, I commend the Malaysia Amateur Athletic Union for its zero-tolerance of smoking because they know that smoking and health just do not mix. How can our sportsmen excel if they cannot stop smoking.

Dear teachers and students, thank you for your attention. Let me end my speech by reiterating that smoking is a bad habit, so make Tak Nak your mantra. If you have started smoking, say Tak Nak and quit! And if you haven’t started smoking, say know that smoking not only damages your health but you are also literally burning your money.

14 January 2011

Dear John,

How are you? I’m sorry to hear that your cousin had dengue fever. This problem seems to have become very serious all of sudden. We always feel that the problem is not our concern until someone close to us is affected.

My neighbour’s daughter who was in Standard 6 last year could not sit for UPSR examination because she was down with dengue fever on the eve of the exam. Fortunately, the authorities gave her an exemption so she is now in Form One. There were also a few students taking the examination in the hospital.

According to the news, students made up nearly 30 per cent of the 1 500 suspected cases over the first three weeks of the year. About 53 per cent of 621 confirmed cases last year comprised children and youth under the age of 24. These statistics are quite worrying. This has prompted the health ministry to increase checks on aedes breeding grounds in school and public areas. The construction sites are largely to blamed. The problem is made worse by the rainy season. The stagnating water attract the mosquitoes to lay egg and breeding on the areas.

The authorities have taken various steps to control the situation. Fogging has been carried out in many public areas and most of the housing estates. Contractors at the construction sites have been instructed to take appropriate actions and warned to clean up. They could be fined up to RM 3 000 for breeding aedes mosquitoes. Lot of campaigns through the television, radio and newspapers were taken to make people aware of the issue and take precaution rather than cure them.

Before the long holidays for the Chinese New Year, schools all over Malaysia carried out a clean-up campaign of the school compound. The residents’ association in my housing are also organised a family day clean-up of the housing estate. There were huge piles of rubbish especially old tyres and containers littered by the hawkers near the might market site.

The situation in Malaysia has improved since the end of January. There have been no reports of new cases of dengue. So, don’t worry. You can bring your family for a holiday here in June. I’m looking forward to seeing them again.

Send my regard to your mom and dad. Do take care.

Yours sincerely,

07200 Bandar Baru Sentol                                                                             16 JUNE 2011

Dear Sir,
Uncollected Rubbish and Clogged Drains

I am writing this letter is to attract your attention to the above title. As the representative of the community, I am calling to tell you that the 300 odd residents living in Taman Sentosa are extremely unhappy about the lackadaisical attitude of the local town council towards the uncollected rubbish and clogged drains in our area.

2.         The rubbish in our area has not been collected for more than a week. The rubbish is supposed to be collected on alternate days but this has not been the case. The town council workers collect the rubbish according to their own whims and fancies. The uncollected garbage has attracted not only flies and mosquitoes but also wild dogs which had attacked the residents on several occasions. These stray animals also scatter the rubbish and make the roads dirty and smelly. As a result, residents have to bear the discomfort of stench from the garbage and risk their health.

3.         We are also disappointed with the town council workers for not clearing the clogged drains which are filled with rubbish. The drains would usually overflow when there is heavy rain and the rubbish would then flow into the compounds of our houses. Besides, putting up with the unbearable stench emitted from them, the residents have to spend hours cleaning their compounds of rotten vegetables, food leftovers and other rubbish.

4.         Due to dengue outbreak recently, we are really concerned about the residents’ health especially the children. Fogging service also was not done accordingly to the schedule. The fogging authority only did their job whenever a case of dengue aroused. They even fogging the neighbourhood late at night that caused us to leave the residents. They need to consider the residents who have babies and also to those who need to wake up early in the morning for work. The fogging also caused the people to have breathing problem when we were not told the exact time of fogging.

5.         We have made numerous appeals to the Municipal Council to look into our complaints but to no avail. We have been putting up with this predicament for more than a week. We hope the health authorities would do something to check these health hazards.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,
Raju
